The Slow Work of Soul Formation

“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” — Romans 12:2

We live in a culture obsessed with speed. Faster downloads. Quicker results. Instant gratification. But soul work doesn’t happen on a timeline we control.

Spiritual formation is slow. It’s the daily, unglamorous practice of letting Scripture shape us—one thought, one response, one moment at a time.

This journey isn’t about achieving a spiritual “goal.” It’s about becoming a person who walks with God. Who responds to life with love. Who embraces purpose not as productivity but as presence—rooted in truth, beauty, and goodness.

Each week, I’m inviting you to take that journey with me. A rhythm of returning to Scripture. Reflecting deeply. Asking honest questions. And letting God shape us in the quiet places where no one is watching.

Because the soul doesn’t grow through striving. It grows through surrender.

But here’s what’s wild: even surrender has a rhythm.

According to research from the Center for Bible Engagement, reading the Bible four or more times per week changes lives. Not just spiritually—but emotionally, morally, and relationally.

They call it the Power of 4. The data is clear:

  • People who engage Scripture four times weekly are far less likely to struggle with destructive habits like anger, addiction, or isolation.

  • They’re also far more likely to live on mission—sharing their faith, discipling others, and giving generously.

  • Most strikingly, the difference doesn’t show up at 1, 2, or even 3 times a week—but at 4. Something shifts at 4. It’s the tipping point.

First Step: Embrace the Rhythm

So here’s where we begin—simply:

This week, read your Bible four times. Start here:

  1. Psalm 1— a vision of the soul rooted like a tree by water.

  2. John 15:1-17 — connected to Jesus

  3. Jeremiah 17:5-10 — trusting God's strength

  4. Colossians 2:6-15 —built up in Christ

Each time you open it:

  • Read slowly. Let a phrase linger.

  • Reflect prayerfully. Ask: What kind of tree am I becoming? Where are my roots planted?

  • Respond honestly. Journal a sentence. Whisper a prayer. Talk to God like you would a trusted friend.

Let’s not just read Scripture. Let’s be read by it.

Let’s not just study truth. Let’s be shaped by it.

Let’s not just know Jesus. Let’s walk with Him.
